The ÖBB Tauern Tunnel between Böckstein and Mallnitz (Tauernschleuse) is over 115 years old. The second phase of the modernisation works will take place from 8 February to 9 July 2027.
The second phase of the Tauern Railway Tunnel modernisation works will once again result in a complete closure of the Tauern line between Salzburg and Carinthia from 8 February to 9 July 2027. During this period, an extensive rail replacement service will be put in place.
Rail replacement service 2027
• Direct buses run every hour between Bischofshofen and Spittal-Millstättersee.
• A rail replacement service also runs every hour between Schwarzach-St. Veit and Bad Gastein.
• Long-distance trains will run every two hours between Mallnitz-Obervellach and Spittal-Millstättersee.
• There may be changes to the timetable on the Spittal-Millstättersee – Villach route.
• Night train services will be diverted during the closure.
Bicycle service
An additional shuttle service for cyclists is once again being provided for those travelling by bike. ÖBB is thus building on the concept that proved successful during the first phase of construction. Details regarding timetables, capacity and booking options will be published on the ÖBB website in good time before the closure begins.
In addition, the modernised trains on the Tauernbahn car ferry service will have increased capacity for bicycles in future.
The Tauernbahn car ferry service is expected to resume operations from 10 July 2027.
