A mosaic of delightful Friulian villages

The municipality of Pavia di Udine boasts a remarkable 15 villas built between the 15th and 18th centuries. There are also seven belltowers, which in the past were considered important landmarks on an otherwise completely flat territory.
The cycle trail enters the territory of Pavia di Udine by following a pleasant country lane lined with vineyards and the banks of the Torre river. Pavia di Udine’s old town lies about 500 metres from the path and offers treasures such as the Villa Lovaria, the Church of San Giovanni dei Battuti with its hints of surviving frescoes, and on the square, the graceful neoclassical church of San Ulderico with its handsome portico embellished with frescoes and marble angels holding the coat of arms of Patriarch Girolamo Grandenigo. Just by the church, there are a number of eateries as well as the beautiful Villa Mantica-Frangipane. Every year Pavia di Udine (end of August-beginning of September) stages the Sagra dei Pirus (Pear Festival), which proposes, among various attractions, great concerts.
The next village you encounter on the cycle trail is tiny Selvuzzis, upon which 17th century Villa Decani looms large with its 4 floors and solid square shape. The trail then heads towards Lauzacco, but bends to the left just shy of it. However, if you decide to add a small diversion to your route (anywhere between 700 metres and 1.4 km), you would be able to enjoy the sight of opulent Villa Beretta, as well as the food of the local eateries and the fresh water from the so called “Waterhouse”, the modern water-filtering fountain. Finally, when resuming the official trail, you will reach the lovely village of Persereano, dominated by the impressive villa Florio-Masieri, built in the XVII century and protected by its ornate wrought iron gates.
