The town of seven hills
Buja is a loose collection of 49 villages and hamlets which together make up a municipality, yet none of these bear the name Buja. The centre of the community is the village of Santo Stefano with its neogothic church, the town hall and the shops: this is also where the weekly market is held on Tuesday.
From your bicycle you can enjoy the attractive hilly landscape with its patchwork of watercourses, meadows, woods, fields and vineyards. The cycle trail will take you to the village of Tomba, with the church of Santa Annunziata, and to San Floreano where the water streams mirror the old wash-houses - tiny buildings consisting of a roof resting on slender pillars where women used to go to wash their laundry – and the ruins of past watermills. The cycle trail also crosses the hamlets of Avilla, with the church of San Pietro (St. Peter), Ursinins Grande, with the Madonna della Neve (Our Lady of the Snow) neoclassical church, and the open air public swimming pool where you may like to spend a relaxing break (located in via Vidiset 49).

From San Floreano follow the Salita di Monte (about 1.6 km and a 130 metre climb) to reach the ancient burgh of Monte di Buia, with the ancient San Lorenzo church, the castle’s ruins, the Museum of Medals and the Remembrance Park with its imposing cross paying tribute to the fallen of both world wars. On the same mountain one can take a stroll in a wood offering a wealth of diverse tree species. The Pieve of San Lorenzo – “pieve” meaning rural church with a baptismal font; an important feature in the Middle Ages –has a long history and it houses a series of frescoes (14th and 15th centuries) with scenes from the Virgin Mary’s life. From here you can enjoy a breath-taking view over the surrounding moraine hills and the Julian Alps.
