Rio Bianco and Cucco Reserves
The fully protected nature reserves of Rio Bianco and Cucco were established in 1975 within the Forest of Tarvisio. Both feature rare ecological aspects of great value.
The Rio Bianco Nature Reserve extends over 378 hectares at 700- 1900 metres above sea level. Its boundaries, at first glance very tortuous and irregular, were drawn precisely to include all the unspoilt areas which, due to their inaccessibility, had remained untouched by human activity in the past. The rugged aspect of the overhanging cliffs makes for a very attractive landscape, but only leaves space for small areas of woodland. Indeed, mixed woods of Norway spruce, black pines, Scots pines and larch only become established where they can, often accompanied by a thick carpet of shrubs. Beech and spruce woods only grow in the most sheltered hollows.
The Cucco Nature Reserve extends over 21 hectares near the Rio Bianco reserve, at 800 metres above sea level, in the area near the Malborghetto, on the moraine slope of Monte Alpe Piccola.
It is distinguished by the presence of a pure population of Austrian black pines; despite its limited size, it is populated by a host of animal species.
